Light steers the investigation toward his own ends using the notebook inherited from Misa and his link to Teru Mikami. Mikami, a fanatical Kira believer, begins acting as the "proxy hand" that carries out executions in Light's place. Near, meanwhile, has all but confirmed that the second L is Kira and drives a wedge between the SPK and the Japanese task force. Light plots to eliminate Near, but the cautious rival never hands over decisive proof. A cold war of nerves continues — cooperating on the surface while cornering each other — as the pieces are set one by one for the final showdown.
