With his headquarters surrounded by Kira worshippers, Near escapes the crisis through a method no ordinary mind would conceive. Having carefully stacked up everything so far, Near turns his suspicion of the second L — Light — into conviction and begins to shake the Japanese task force itself. Light, in turn, uses his pawn Mikami to try to lure Near into a trap. The war of nerves, with neither side yielding a single move, is honed to its limit as the story drives toward the brink of the final showdown.

Near deftly evades the threat of the SPK's destruction and all but completes his conviction that Light is Kira. A stage is set for a direct confrontation where Light, Near, and both sides' investigators gather in one place. Light plans to have Mikami write everyone's names in the real Death Note and wipe them all out on the spot. Near, however, anticipates Mikami's movements and prepares a countermeasure by swapping out the notebook's pages. The picture of cooperating on the surface while holding blades to each other's throats is complete, and every thread is laid for the final clash in the next volume. Light's victory looks near — yet the cracks that will undo him have already been planted.
