To secure Nami's navigation skills and a sea chart of the Grand Line, Luffy resolves to face the clown Buggy head-on. Splitting his body apart with the Chop-Chop Fruit and even commanding cannon fire, Buggy is no ordinary foe. It also comes to light that Buggy once sailed aboard the Roger Pirates alongside Luffy's hero, the red-haired Shanks. As grudges and buried history collide, Luffy's rubber powers spark a comeback that shakes the fate of the whole town.

Buggy nurses a long-standing grudge against Shanks, and it fuels his clash with Luffy. The chart falls into Nami's hands, and through battles to protect the town and the little dog Chouchou, the trust between Luffy and Nami slowly grows. Zoro recovers, and the Straw Hats head for the next town. Buggy survives, planted as a seed for his later reappearance before Luffy.
