With Second Kira Misa Amane in L's custody, Light — tied to her — is driven into a corner of his own. As a reversal, Light asks to be confined himself and, in the extremity, tells Ryuk he will give up the Death Note. What is his true aim? During the confinement Kira's killings stop cold and suspicion of Light seems to fade. But just as the world lets its guard down, Kira stirs again — and the board rolls in a direction no one can foresee.

Death Note Vol. 5 spoilers
⚠️ Spoilers ahead.
When Light renounces ownership of the notebook, he loses his memories and becomes a man who genuinely believes in his own innocence. Because killings continue during his confinement, L's suspicion is deflected — and instead the president of Misa's father's Yagami Group begins acting as Kira. It's all Light's grand scheme to pass the notebook to a third party; Light and Misa are cleared and released. But the memory-wiped Light now sincerely helps hunt Kira, forging an alibi even L can't crack. The line between hunter and hunted dissolves, and the story enters its most dangerous equilibrium.
