Freed from slavery, Thorfinn stops first in his homeland of Iceland to make his expedition to the peaceful new land of Vinland a reality. To gather the enormous funds the voyage will require, he sets out to negotiate with a powerful chieftain long entangled with his father Thors: Halfdan of the Iron Chains. Just then Gudrid, a relative of Leif whose wedding to Halfdan's son Sigurd has just been arranged, storms in demanding a place aboard the ship, desperate to escape a life of confinement.
