Following the scent of white plum, Kenshin and the others find a horrifying sight: Kaoru, a cross-shaped scar carved into her cheek and a sword driven through her chest. Crushed by guilt at failing once more to protect someone he loves, Kenshin loses the will to live and sinks into the "village of the fallen," a refuge for the utterly despairing. The Jinchu arc plunges into its darkest depths, where the hero is completely broken. Volume 24 asks whether Kenshin can ever rise again from the ruins of his own heart.
