Unable to read Guren's true motives, Yuichiro chooses escape and refuses to abandon Mika. Mahiru's clash with Mika is savage, pitting his vampire nature against the last shreds of his human memories. No-ya hunts the pair because of the vampires' scheme surrounding the Shikama Doji, and Guren's refusal to free Yu is hinted to be a deliberate feint to deceive the enemy. By putting Mika above his squad, Yuichiro plants the seed that will later tear Shinoa Squad apart, and the volume closes on a sense of impending betrayal.
