At the center is a turn in which a single request sends Shiro and Yuzan at the same challenge from different angles. Shiro travels to the site, trying to understand a flavor along with the lives of those who make it. Yuzan, by contrast, sketches the ideal of a plate from the grade and history of the ingredient. Their answers differ in expression, yet in the end they meet on one point: "a flavor that could be born nowhere but this land." The scene in which the person acting as judge sheds tears is striking, and one more small bridge is laid across the father and son's long feud. Kurita's support shines too, and the volume carries a warm afterglow into the next.
