Next spring, the first-ever Baseball World Cup will be held in the United States, and Goro Shigeno, now making his name as a closer for the Triple-A Bats, is called up to Japan's youth-selection squad. In a practice game against the senior national team, Goro takes the mound with the bases loaded and his side already reeling. Waiting at the plate is major leaguer Kojiro. Goro's new weapon, the gyro forkball, is still wild and hard to control, yet catcher Toshiya Sato keeps calling for it anyway. Just what is Sato thinking? The long road toward the world stage begins here, quiet at first but burning underneath.

Major Vol. 56 spoilers
⚠️ Spoilers ahead.
Goro's gyro forkball is still barely controllable, dancing on the edge of a wild pitch. But that is exactly why Sato keeps calling it: he is forging Goro's control under real fire before the tournament. Kojiro cannot solve the erratic movement, and Goro grits his way out of the bases-loaded jam. That outing earns him a confirmed place on the youth squad and a second trip to America. Shimizu finds the courage to choose his own path, too. Then, in the final pages, a sudden notice about an "eleventh pitcher" lands on the team, planting the seed for a new fight over a roster spot.
