Ippo Makunouchi is a timid high schooler who helps run his mother's fishing-boat business and endures relentless bullying. One day he is rescued by Takamura, a rising boxer aiming for the Oriental Pacific title. When Ippo throws a punch at the gym's sandbag, everyone senses the raw power buried in his fists. Haunted by a single question, "What does it mean to be strong?", he decides to chase a professional boxing dream and face the brutal entrance test of the famed Kamogawa Gym. This is where one of manga's greatest boxing sagas takes its first step.

Hajime no Ippo Vol. 1 spoilers
⚠️ Spoilers ahead.
Takamura sets an absurd challenge: catch ten falling leaves with clothespins to prove Ippo's reflexes. Everyone calls it impossible, but Ippo trains like a man possessed and clears it at the last second, earning real respect from Takamura and Coach Kamogawa. He is admitted to the gym, only to be thrown straight into a spar against Ichiro Miyata, a natural counterpuncher who dismantles his rhythm and distance with ease. The gap in talent stings, and the fated rivalry that will define the whole series begins right here.
