After a one-week hiatus caused by certain circumstances, Shinpachi shows up for work at the Yorozuya as usual, only to find a world where two whole years have passed. A scruffy, unshaven Gintoki, a matured Kagura, and utterly changed faces greet him. Every familiar person and situation has transformed, leaving Shinpachi stranded outside the flow of time in total confusion, with no one willing to seriously explain what happened. Built around the standout meta-comedy long arc known as the Two Years Later chapter, this volume also packs in gloriously dumb everyday tales like the shogun at the pool and a crab-grabbing brawl.

Gin Tama Vol. 37 spoilers
⚠️ Spoilers ahead.
The two years later world turns out to be one enormous prank staged to paper over the one-week hole left by Shinpachi's absence, and everyone's transformation is an elaborate group hoax. Gintoki's beard, Kagura's growth, even a giant Sadaharu are all exaggerated theatre, and the comedy springs from Shinpachi being the only one left genuinely bewildered. Sorachi's signature move of turning a real-world serialization hiatus into in-story material runs wild here. As a breather between serious long arcs, it paradoxically underlines how the characters' bonds never really change.
