Burned out from the pressure of a competitive prep school, Yugo Hachiken enrolls at Ooezo Agricultural High School for one reason only: it has dorms far from home. A city kid, he knows nothing of dairy farming or crops. He gets lost chasing a calf, is stunned by how eggs are laid, and struggles with the brutal early mornings and physical labor. Yet as he bonds with classmates like Aki Mikage and Komaba, and with the animals themselves, he begins to confront the true weight of eating living things. Hiromu Arakawa of Fullmetal Alchemist draws on her own farm upbringing for this earthy coming-of-age tale.

⚠️ Spoilers ahead.
Overwhelmed at first, Hachiken slowly carves out a place for himself at Ezono. Building a brick pizza oven with his friends, he tastes the joy of making something with his own hands for the first time. He names the runt piglet Pork Bowl and grows attached to it, not yet grasping the cruel meaning that name will carry. A former honor student weighed down by his past, he starts touching values that grades can never measure. Watching Aki chase horse-riding and Komaba chase baseball forces him to face a painful truth: he has no dream of his own.
