Having single-handedly wiped out the massive Red Ribbon Army, Goku hunts for the last remaining Dragon Ball—but the Dragon Radar shows nothing at all. At a loss, he seeks out Fortuneteller Baba, the older sister of Master Roshi. To have Baba divine its location, though, he must either defeat her five bodyguards or pay an outrageous fee. With no money, Goku has no choice but to fight his way through. Through a string of clashes with fearsome opponents, he grows tougher still in this volume of training and adventure.

Goku, along with Krillin, Yamcha and the others, takes on Baba's bodyguards and beats back one tough foe after another. The final challenger is a masked warrior of unknown identity. After a fierce, evenly matched battle, Goku tears off the mask and, to his tearful surprise, finds it is his late adoptive grandfather, Grandpa Gohan. Allowed back to the living world for a single day from the afterlife, Grandpa Gohan sees how splendidly Goku has grown and departs content. Having cleared the bodyguards, Goku learns from Baba where the last Dragon Ball lies and sets off on his next adventure.
