A classmate named Uryu Ishida confronts Ichigo and abruptly declares war: "I hate Soul Reapers." Uryu is one of the last survivors of the Quincy, a people who oppose the Soul Reapers. He challenges Ichigo to a contest, whoever slays the most Hollows within 24 hours wins, but the provocation draws a swarm of Hollows into the town. This clash with a proud rival propels Ichigo toward a far greater battle. Volume 5 begins Tite Kubo's tale of a nemesis who becomes a comrade.
